Great Chamber II.

The Great Chamber was created by combining a bedchamber and a living room. They are separated by a richly carved dividing wall. At the bottom of the wall there are reliefs of mythical animals. On the reverse side of the wall, proverbs are inscribed in Hungarian:

“The fool seeth enmity in reproof.”

“Knowledge is the crown, understanding is the necklace.”

"For the sake of the rose, we must water thorns.”

“Speech is silver, silence is golden.”

“In the summer days, be diligent like the ants.”

“Silence wins love.”

The painting of the room depicts the lineage of Christ, who descended from the line of the Israel's King David. The basic motif, which is repeated in several fields, corresponds to the biblical representation of a shoot coming up from the roots. In the crown of the tree there are the eight figures of the Old Testament kings. The figures symmetrically, on both sides, surround the enthroned Madonna with the infant Jesus in her arms. Above the Madonna a pair of kneeling angels is painted. The furniture in the Great Chamber was commissioned by count Pálffy and made by the Innsbruck firm of Colli.
